This Saturday is the first Royal Philharmonic Relaxed Performance that I have the pleasure of being commissioned to make video projections for.

This is a clip from of one of the animations I have made to accompany the orchestra performing Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns.

The Relaxed performances are inclusive and the RPO says:
“Imagine an orchestra concert that welcomes everyone – where fidgeting is fine, chill-out spaces are ready, and the musical joy knows no boundaries.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra invites you to a musical afternoon designed to delight all families and friends. Whether you have a wiggly toddler, a child with additional needs, a loved one with dementia, or simply want a wonderfully inclusive concert experience – this is your musical celebration.”

I really enjoyed working responsively to the music myself and took a sensory and tactile approach, thinking about texture, colour, movement and light, often using analogue methods such as handmade slides, painting and stop frame animation to create the videos. This project has inclusion at its heart and I’m proud to have had the opportunity to be part of it.

We’re very much enjoying playing with photography in different ways. One process leads to another then another and on so on… many layers, different options, approaches and ways in….

I’m really enjoying working on a new project with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra who have commissioned me to make a series of video projections to accompany different orchestral works performed as part of their Relaxed Performance series.

This clip here is one of the tests I’ve made as a starting point for one of the pieces (the music here is just one I added for this reel - it isn’t one of the orchestral pieces I’m working with as that will be revealed later). It was made by digitally processing a hand made ‘turntable/record player zoetrope’ animation.

According to RPO the relaxed performance events are specially designed for people who may find traditional concerts challenging to attend, including adults and children with learning disabilities, movement disorders, sensory impairments, autistic spectrum disorder, dementia and other neurological conditions, or those with young children or babies.

Some of the objects and sounds for ‘echo’ were made during a workshop with The Wonder Club. We had such fun experimenting with ASMR style recordings of the tactile sounds of the objects being touched and manipulated. Came across this sequence made a few years ago during some research with Tuesday Studio @projectartworks - nice to rediscover things.. a mix of rephotograhed and scanned mark making solar prints and scratched, drawn on and over painted prints and found slides.

The research was around working with photography/photographic processes in inclusive ways for the In Focus Explorers Project.

We had such fun experimenting with different ways of using photography and now we are finally all back in one space (due to covid changing the way we worked) and now having access to @projectartworks new space I’m looking forward to and hoping for some more springtime photographic experiments with the brilliant Tuesday Studio group.

The Wonder Lab ended today with a chance to test out ideas, playing with video projection interventions within the museum collection at Hove Museum of creativity. We are all going away to develop new work in response to and with material, conversations, research and workshops that happened over the last few days. The video in this post features a fab animation made with 11 year old Lyra who visit the museum on Monday - thanks Lyra!

The Wonder Lab ended today with a chance to test out ideas, playing with video projection interventions within the museum collection at Hove Museum of creativity. Wonder Lab starts THIS WEEKEND! I’ll be part of the artist-led team in residence at Hove Museum of Creativity. Open to the public 10-12 February. Really excited to be working alongside a brilliant group of artists, Bella Okuya, Sapphire Goss and Connor Turansky, that Videoclub and Corridor selected through an open call, as well as the Wonder Club, a group of young people who have been working with the fabulous Chahine Fellahi over the last few months.

We’ll all be responding to the museums film collection as well as a selection of films from Screen Archive South East. There’ll be hands on things to do, conversation with artists, pop-up workshops and more. We’ll all be making new work in response to the lab which will be exhibited later in the year. Come and say hello!

The Kiss is the Tunnel is one from a collection of films Screen Archive South East have curated for the Wonder Lab team to respond to.
